Me and My Big Mouth

  • Me and My Big Mouth

    Lesson Summary – October 1, 2026

WAIT = Why Am I Talking?

James 3:3 – Horses need a bit in their mouth to control them

James 3:4 – Ships are controlled by a small rudder

Words are important. In Proverbs alone “tongue” or “mouth” are mentioned 90 times. The average American speaks about 16,000 words a day.

    Why We Even Have Speech

Because God created the universe with words. We are made in His image. We were created to communicate with God and with each other.

    Power In The Tongue

Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear it.”

Ephesians 4:31 “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with malice. Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

We Should Be Slow To Speak

James 1:19 “Know this, my beloved brothers, let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” Fewer words can mean they carry more weight when you DO speak.

    Our Hearts

Our speech shows what is in our hearts.

First, we need to pay attention to our inner speech: What are we saying to ourselves: God does not call us stupid, lazy, or worthless. God says to me through scripture that I AM Courageous, Redeemed, Beautiful, Chosen, Forgiven, and Gifted. God says I am made for a purpose.

Second, we need to meditate on Scripture. The more we read and memorize His word the more our hearts will be transformed. A heart that has experienced God’s grace should be soft – one that produces words that are patient, truthful, and kind.

    Word That Wound

Have you ever said something and you wished you could pull it back? Too late!

Proverbs 12:18 “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Hurtful words can come from the people we care about the most. If we have hurt someone, don’t say, I am sorry, but…..Own it, apologize, no excuses, and ask for forgiveness. Being humble helps. It is out of the heart that the mouth speaks. We need God to change our hearts so He can heal the mouth.

What Does God Say About Lying

    Proverbs 6:16-19

Three out of 7 things He calls an abomination have to do with sins of the tongue:

    • a lying tongue

    • a false witness

    • one who sows discord among brothers

    Sins of the tongue include;

    • slander

    • gossip

    • flattery

John 8:44 - Satan is a liar and the father of lies

Proverbs 12:22 – Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.

    Speaking The Truth In Love

Speaking the truth and not with love is awful! Maybe it’s better not to say anything at all!
